Cruising Milford Sound, New Zealand – March 8, 2014
Milford Sound on the South Island of New Zealand is, in fact, a fiord. Its sheer rock faces illustrate the major stages of the early glacial history of this area. Chuck hiked the Milford Track in 1996 so he is especially interested in experiencing it this time from the sea.
The Sound is the wettest place in New Zealand (a recent record is 29 ft of rain in one year!) and is known for its extreme and unpredictable climate. We arrived here at dawn to find ethereal ribbons of mist draped over the landscape. This land of shadows is indeed a study in grays.
It comes as no surprise that Rudyard Kipling called Milford Sound the 8th wonder of the world.
